WHAT TO EXPECT
Hatha Yoga is the physical part of a Yoga practice that is most commonly practiced in the U.S. While similar to aerobics or Pilates, Yoga looks to both work and stretch the body and then quiet the mind by connecting movement with breath.
Yoga has many proven health benefits increasing strength and flexibility, and improving posture and balance and can be a useful tool in stress management and weight loss by helping the student live more mindfully.
A typical hour and fifteen minute Hatha Yoga practice starts with a brief centering, helping the students let go of their busy lives and bring their focus to the class. A series of warm ups follows. Then increasingly challenging poses are introduced with a peak pose appropriate to the level of the class. Finally, there is series of cool down poses followed by a relaxation period to help students integrate the practice and quiet their minds.
A class may also include a Pranayama breathing practice a deep relaxation or meditation practice. Classes can range in difficulty and style from calm, slow and restorative to active, sweaty and physically challenging.
